Harmony X: Enhancing Exercise Performance through Context-aware Generative Music

HarmonyX enhanced daily exercise performance by utilizing context-aware generative music based on running cadence and heart rate sensing, and providing periodic training feedback. Our system consists of a wearable smart glove and a mobile app, connected via Wi-Fi for real-time communication. We implemented an algorithmic framework that customizes music based on users’ preferences and physiological states, with beats and melodies aligning seamlessly with their current states.

1. Background

More and more people are paying attention to body management by engaging in regular aerobic exercises. They prefer to listen to music while exercising to relieve fatigue and boredom, however, issues remain in playlist selection, rhythm control, and maintaining the right state. Existing exercise musics are too monotonous and ineffective in enhancing the workout, leading users to not want to listen for extended periods. Besides, the music that users like, such as their playlists from Apple Music or Spotify, may not necessarily be suitable for exercise as it can disrupt the workout rhythm, thus it requires a significant amount of time to manually select playlists.
